This project consists of the construction and maintenance of shrines dedicated to a network of storm drains in Piscataway, New Jersey. These drains flow into the Raritan River and from there into the Atlantic Ocean. My process is one of paying consistent attention over time, of growth and accumulation through repeated visits. By attending to these drains in this way, I acknowledge their agency in the landscape, activate overlooked junk-space, question the boundary between what is deemed "natural" and "unnatural", and test my own ideas about what might be considered "animate" or "inanimate". There are six main shrines and several minor ones. I invite viewers to visit the shrines, either independently or on guided walking tours. I intend this pilgrimage to be an experience during which viewers are given the opportunity to try out an alternate way of understanding and engaging their immediate surroundings. From March 24 through April 4, the Civic Square Building in New Brunswick will host a kiosk of maps and information. To view other projects by Anne Percoco, visit her website. |
